Enhanced Additionality Assessment

Additional Audit via UNFCCC Project Quality Criteria

In addition to the audit completed via the applicable mechanism, each project is assessed alongside the IPCC criteria for offsetting project development.

Project Category
Restriction and Analysis

Complete assurance over emissions avoidance or capture are required for the highest rating credit.

 

As a result, projects are selected from a filtered list of higher risk project categories, and so no REDD or REDD+ (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) projects are utilised. 

Satellite, AI and Remote Sensing Review

Independent validation of project development and outcomes are reviewed via satellite, AI, and/or remote sensing - where applicable.

 

Tree planting and reforestation sites can be remotely tracked and reviewed (alongside surrounding areas), to ensure optimal carbon capture has occurred as expected.

Durability & Permanence
Assessment

Permanence of each project is evaluated to ensure emissions avoidance or capture last for 100 years or more.

 

Durability is also assessed for direct air capture and enhanced weathering projects, where permanence can be assured for hundreds of years via technological solutions.

Continuous Project
Outcome Monitoring 

The highest credit rating requires continuous monitoring of each project to ensure it will continue to deliver the expected emissions reductions over time.

 

In addition, continuous monitoring ensures issues and deviations of emissions reporting are addressed throughout the crediting period of any project supported.

What is carbon offsetting and how does it work?

Carbon offsetting allows businesses to balance out their unavoidable emissions by funding projects that reduce or remove carbon from the atmosphere, such as renewable energy, reforestation, or technological carbon removal programs. These offsets are measured in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) and verified through international standards to ensure real, measurable impact.

Is carbon offsetting just a way to avoid reducing emissions?

Reducing your carbon footprint each year is extremely important, and can only be achieved by accurately tracking and measuring your footprint (as we would be undertaking for your business).  Software and internal estimates are often highly inaccurate - and so by calculating your emissions via the ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol Corporate Standards, with third party assurance from CNB, you will not only have an accurate figure, but also accurate targets and suggestions to reduce your carbon footprint each year.  

 

However, this is only part of the solution, and achieving zero emissions will take many years (with many emissions you produce being 'unavoidable' in the short term).  IPCC studies (and COP discussions each year) highlight the importance of businesses making a difference in the next 5 years before changes to the climate are irreversible, and so by Carbon Offsetting, you will also be doing your part for the Planet now - when it is the most important.
