What Are Kelp?
Kelp are large, brown seaweeds characterized by their flat blades. These remarkable organisms are typically found around rocky shores, forming dense underwater forests. Often referred to as 'marine trees,' kelp anchor themselves to the seabed and create a 'canopy' under which a plethora of marine species find shelter and sustenance.
The Ecosystem Services Provided by Kelp
Kelp forests are among the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. Beyond their role in enhancing biodiversity, kelp provide a myriad of ecosystem services that benefit nature, people, and the planet. These services include:

Focus on Sussex Kelp Species

Although Furbellows is not a true kelp, it is often considered a pseudokelp due to its similar appearance and ecological role.
The Life Cycle of Kelp
Kelp has a fascinating multi-staged life cycle, beginning as a free-floating microscopic organism known as a 'gametophyte.' The kelp we observe anchored to the seabed is the 'sporophyte' phase, which is the final stage of its development.

Young sporophytes initially develop a simple blade, which is challenging to distinguish among species. As they mature, they either grow into a single large blade, as seen in Sugar Kelp, or develop longer stipes and wider blades that form multiple fronds or 'digits,' characteristic of Oarweed, Tangle, and Furbellows.
Longevity and Growth
The lifespan of kelp varies among species. Some, like Oarweed and Tangle, are perennial and can live for over two decades. In contrast, Furbellows is an annual species with a lifespan of just one year, while Sugar Kelp can be annual but often lives for two to three years.
