Salkhit Wind Farm in Mongolia
One of the projects that Carbon Neutral Britain supports is Salkhit Wind Farm in Mongolia.
Mongolia, known for its vast steppe and rugged terrain, has made a significant stride towards a sustainable future with the development of the first grid-connected wind farm in the country. The Salkhit Wind Farm, located about 70 kilometers southeast of the capital Ulaanbaatar, generates renewable electricity using wind power resources and supplies it to the Mongolian central electricity system grid to meet the growing electricity demand.
The project is a joint venture between the Government of Mongolia, Clean Energy LLC, and Newcom LLC. The 50 MW wind farm consists of 31 turbines and is capable of generating 168.5 GWh of electricity annually. The wind farm project reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by avoiding CO₂ emissions from electricity generation from fossil fuel power plants that are supplied to the grid. The expected annual emission reduction of 178,778 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) is a significant step towards mitigating climate change in Mongolia.
The specific goals of the project are to generate clean electricity, reduce GHG emissions, and contribute to the reduction of air pollutants by saving coal and water consumption compared to a business-as-usual scenario. Introducing wind power in Mongolia and helping to stimulate the implementation of other renewable energy sources are essential goals of the project. The Salkhit Wind Farm is the first grid-connected renewable energy source in Mongolia and serves as a model for other renewable energy projects in the country.
The Salkhit Wind Farm is also the first independent power producer with private sector investment in the country. The project introduces private sector investment in the renewable energy sector and paves the way for future projects. The success of the project demonstrates the viability of renewable energy in Mongolia and encourages other investors to invest in the renewable energy sector.
The Salkhit Wind Farm has also created local employment opportunities during project development, construction, and operation phases. The project has created local expertise for future projects and helped to build local capacity in the renewable energy sector. The project has also provided an opportunity for local communities to benefit from renewable energy development by providing employment opportunities and contributing to local economic growth.
In conclusion, the Salkhit Wind Farm is a game-changer for renewable energy in Mongolia. The project's success demonstrates the viability of renewable energy in the country and encourages other investors to invest in the renewable energy sector. The project's goals of generating clean electricity, reducing GHG emissions, and creating local employment opportunities have been achieved, making the Salkhit Wind Farm a model for other renewable energy projects in Mongolia. The development of the Salkhit Wind Farm is a significant step towards a sustainable future for Mongolia and the world.
