Malawi Reforestation - Project Update

Continuing Our Mission to Grow a Sustainable Future

At Carbon Neutral Britain, we are proud to share the latest developments from our reforestation partnership in Malawi—a project that continues to deliver environmental and community-driven impact. As the new tree planting season approaches, the local teams have been hard at work monitoring growth, supporting farmers, and preparing for another successful year of reforestation across Mzimba, Nkhotakota, and Salima Districts.

Growing Progress, Nurturing Futures

Recent field visits across the districts have shown promising growth from both last season’s plantings and seedlings that are currently being prepared for the next cycle. An inspiring visit to Mankhwazi Village in Salima District, where the project team met Katrina and her son Severiano. A mother of eight and grandmother of six, Katrina has taken a bold step toward reversing local deforestation. “We used to have lots of trees and reliable rainfall. This is not the case now. I wanted to plant trees for my children so that they benefit in future,” she shared.

Katrina has already planted 4,000 acacia trees on degraded farmland and has plans to plant thousands more. Her son Severiano added, “My mother raised me, this is the time for me to give back and help her.” This powerful story captures the spirit of intergenerational collaboration and long-term thinking that defines the project.

Expanding Impact Through Education

The reforestation initiative continues to expand beyond individual farmers. In Nkhotakota District, local schools are playing a growing role in environmental stewardship. At Kasamba Community Day Secondary School, the Environment Club—consisting of 30 dedicated students—is taking ownership of newly planted trees. The students water and maintain the seedlings, learning firsthand the value of reforestation and environmental care.

Some of the trees planted at the school are intended for future timber use, offering sustainable income opportunities for the institution. As Tione Magomer, a Form 4 student, explained, “This will help the school as they will be able to sell the timber and use the money to buy resources to improve the school for everyone learning there.”

Sustained Commitment, Lasting Impact

This update is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the communities involved. Whether through farmers like Katrina or students like Tione, our project partner in Malawi continues to cultivate not only trees but hope, opportunity, and environmental awareness.

With the rainy season approaching, preparations are in full swing to ensure that the next wave of tree planting is even more impactful. The initiative remains on track to deliver high survival rates and long-term environmental benefits.

Looking Ahead

At Carbon Neutral Britain, we are committed to long-term partnerships that generate measurable climate action and sustainable development. This reforestation project exemplifies how nature-based solutions can strengthen ecosystems while empowering communities.

As we look ahead to the next planting season, we remain deeply inspired by the stories of those driving this work on the ground. Together, we are not just planting trees—we are restoring landscapes, supporting livelihoods, and building a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.
